Peer advocatesFor the past three semesters, peer advocates have been making a difference in the lives of First Year Composition students at NIU.

Peer advocates are sophomores, juniors and seniors who mentor freshman and transfer students in English 103 and 104 classes. Working in a collaborative team with other peer advocates, these mentors provide support through educating peers about resources on campus and helping them with the academic and social transition to NIU.

In December, peer advocates hosted the Freshman Freeze, which was a charity run across campus in the bitter cold benefiting Feed’em Soup. This semester, peer advocates have been holding APA workshops, helping students understand registration, promoting the free campus movies, providing support for the Showcase of Student Writing and more.

First-Year Composition is now looking for Fall 2015 peer advocates.

This program offers a scholarship and possible internship credit. Peer advocates receive ongoing training and support by a team of faculty and advanced mentors. Interested students can apply online.
